I saw an interview a view years back, this man was asking people to name a book of the Bible that started with a certain letter. For someone that is a preachers kid, that was very easy for me. However, I was suprised by the fact that not many of the people he interviewed could name books of the Bible.
Do you know what I realized from that? First, I understood that not everyone has been churched. I grew up in the Bible Belt. Everyone went to church even, if you did not live it. Secondly, people need to see the love of Jesus expressed daily through me to be a light and this will draw them to Him. Lastly, for me to be light, I need to ensure that I carry the light in me. Meaning I need to have His presence as well as His Word. You do understand that His Word is His presence also, correct?
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” John 1:1-5 ESV
To be light we have to know Him and to know Him is to know HIS WORD. So it is time to get busy studying the Word, mediating on it and getting it deep within our hearts. How can we be light if we don’t have the light within us? We must have the light of the Word on the inside.
Let’s look at some of the benefits of the Word to us as believers.
1) It cultivates within you a love for God and His Word.
Oh how I love your law. It is my meditation all the day. Psalms 119:97 ESV
2) It gives you new insights and spiritual understanding.
The unfolding of your words gives light; it imparts understanding to the simple. Psalms 119:130 ESV
3) It’s a source of reassurance and strength.
My soul melts away for sorrow; strengthen me according to your word! Psalms 119:23 ESV
4) It empowers you to be a genuine witness for Jesus Christ.
For so the Lord has commanded us, saying,
“‘I have made you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.’” Acts 13:47 ESV
5) It renews your mind.
Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Philippians 4:8 ESV
In this season, it is imperative that we not only know the Word, but we must meditate on it. Meaning, it should always be on our mind. We should memorize it. When you are in need of it, it will spring forth because it has been stored up. When the Word is hidden away in each of you, when it is needed the Holy Spirit will bring it to your remembrance.
But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. John 14:26
Let’s begin today to hide it in hearts. Memorize the Word. Meditate on it!!! Nothing can stand against the Word and we can’t stand without it!!!
Prayer~
Father God In the Name of Jesus,
We give You thanks for Your Word. We come before You Lord honoring You giving You praise. We thank You and we bless Your name Father God.
We thank You for Your Word because Your Word is life, Father. We want to meditate on Your Word in the night watches. Father, we want to bind it around the tables of our heart. Lord, we want to meditate on Your Word day and night. Father God, we just thank you for the manna that you have given us because Your Word is bread and it is water, and we feast upon it. We feast upon it daily, Lord. Holy Spirit help us to remember the Word!! Help us to study the Word!!! Help us to use the Word as an offensive and defensive weapon. It is the sword of the spirit, and as we wield our sword Lord, empower us to cut down, to slay, and to slice and dice the enemy and His tactics. Father, we give you glory, honor and praise. Father, we magnify You and glorify You in the Mighty Name of Jesus, we pray, Amen.
