The Way Up is Down

Humility and honor are deeply connected in the Kingdom of God. To understand why God honors humility, we must first ask an important question: What does it mean to honor?
In today’s culture, honor has been greatly diminished. We see widespread disrespect toward parents, leaders, and authority figures of all kinds. Sadly, this spirit of dishonor often extends even to our Father God.
To honor means to hold in high esteem. I was taught that honor is respect. As a Veteran, we were trained to honor the position even if we disagreed with the person in that position. That principle is deeply biblical.
Honor looks like honoring your mother and father, even when you may not agree with how you were raised. That can be a hard pill to swallow. Yet, in inner healing and deliverance ministry, dishonor and unforgiveness toward parents often reveal deep wounds and open doors the enemy uses to bring bondage.
Honor matters to God. Honoring the Lord is huge.
What does honoring God look like?
• Obedience
• Reverence
• Holy fear
We honor God not for what He can do for us, but for who He is. When we humble ourselves before Him, we acknowledge His authority, His wisdom, and His sovereignty. That posture of humility invites Heaven’s response.
God lifts those who kneel before Him.
Promotion in God’s Kingdom never comes through pride, striving, or self-exaltation. It flows through humility and honor. When we reverence God and even honor people we feel may not deserve it, we are walking in Kingdom order. It is humbling, yes, but it is also powerful and Kingdom-aligned.
And Scripture assures us: when humility and honor are present, God responds with favor, blessing, and divine lifting in God’s timing.
Reflective Questions
1. In what areas of my life is God inviting me to walk in greater humility before Him?
2. Are there any authority figures, parents, leaders, or spiritual covering, where dishonor or unresolved wounds still exist in my heart?
3. How do I currently honor God in my daily obedience, reverence, and choices?
4. Have I tied my trust in God more to what He can do for me than to who He is?
5. What would it look like for me to honor God and others even when I do not fully agree or understand?
6. Is there any unforgiveness the Holy Spirit is bringing to the surface that needs healing and surrender?
7. How can humility reposition me for promotion in God’s timing rather than my own striving?
Prayer
Father God,
I come before You with a humble and yielded heart. I choose to honor You not only for what You do, but for who You are holy, sovereign, and worthy of all reverence. Search my heart and reveal any areas where dishonor, pride, or unforgiveness have taken root.
Heal wounds connected to authority, family, and leadership. I release every offense and lay it at Your feet. Teach me to walk in obedience, holy fear, and deep respect for Your ways. I surrender my timeline, my expectations, and my desire for recognition.
I trust that as I humble myself before You, You are faithful to lift me in Your perfect timing. Align my heart with Your Kingdom order, and let my life reflect honor that brings You glory.
In Jesus’ Name
Amen.
